Byzantium
Eastern type of structures brought up a round-shaped temple with huge central room. Today one can see similar structures in airports or modern train stations. However this structure had a number of drawbacks: it was very big and put excessive pressure on the walls of a building, which had to be made very thick. As a result, the construction was not strong: the notes about colliding of old domes (e.g. the famous Sofia cathedral in Constantinople or Blue mosque in Istanbul, Turkey) often appear in various chronicles.
